Explaining tough topics to our children can be world-shifting moments for them, and as parents we have to be careful to find language that’s appropriate for their ages and sensibilities and that gives them a sense of how they can engage as helpful, caring people. Although we don't want our children to be anxious about the future, we do want them to be part of the solution, not the problem.
Here are some simple ways to discuss climate change with your youngster:
Judy Asselin
Judy Nicholson Asselin has been the Sustainability Director at Westtown School for the past seven years. During her tenure, Westtown has become a leader in integrating sustainability values and practices into curriculum design, strategic planning, and physical plant renovations. Judy is a sustainability consultant for area schools, presents frequently at conferences, and is a member of the Education Task Force of the PA Green and Healthy Schools Partnership whose goal is to transform every school in Pennsylvania to a green school within a generation. She started her career in education as an English and theater teacher in Westtown’s middle and upper schools and has taught graduate courses in writing through the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project. After graduating from Westtown School, where her dual love of the sciences and the humanities was first fueled, she received a BA from Swarthmore College and an MA from Middlebury College. She is passionate about bringing sustainability into the mainstream and relishes opportunities to inspire young people to become architects of a resilient, generative future. Both of her children attended Westtown.
